Environmental Awareness: The Animals Save the Planet

One of my classmates posted this in one of my course's forum, and I thought of sharing it with the rest of you. Easy to understand concept to help the enviroment as animated by these animals. You can also check out at Animal Save the Planet website

Hope you all enjoyed the video clips as much as I did.

140 friends on FB ..

I started out on FB telling myself to only add or accept friends' requests from those that I already know so that I can establish lost friendship and also keep in touch with current friends. I tried my best to make sure I, at least, send a note to all my friends on FB. So far, it has worked fine.

Today, I am loosening some of the self imposed constraints and begin to accept friend request from people that I have not met directly.

Could this be the tipping point? It is time I made friends online as I can't seem to find time to do it 'offline' lately. I seem to know more about my friends' whereabouts and activities through FB anyway as compared to actual physical interactions such as hanging out having coffee or going bowling etc.

Ready or not ... here I come!

The glass is half full ...

Hmm .. if I make a statement like that does that mean I am more optimistic compared to someone who say that the glass is half empty? To a practical observer, the result is the same as the amount of water in the glass is the same no matter how I say it. Anyway, there are a lot of issues running through my mind lately that seems to influence my brain's CPU downtime. I wanted to write about it for quite some time now but I know there is no way I can fully expressed it properly in words. So I won't be writing about it then but for now, I just want to explore others things that may or may not be related to the original intent of me trying to write this blog. Confused? Don't worry ... it is intentional!

Have any of you thought about the term World Champion? For example Best Driver in F1 or Best FIFA World Player for 2008? Is this really true and does the person who won that coveted title really is the best person in the field for that particular year? Or it sexiest man alive is really the sexiest man ALIVE? Or is the world record holder for 100 meter dash is the fastest man on earth?

According to http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/popclockworld.html, the total population of the World, projected to 11/24/08 at 15:40 GMT (EST+5) is 6,739,036,009. Is Lewis Hamilton really the best F1 driver for 2008? Yes the statement is true as Lewis Hamilton did indeed beat the rest of the F1 lineup for 2008. I can imagine there must be another person who can, if given the right training program and equal equipment, beat Lewis Hamilton. Another example is Usain Bolt. Is he really the fastest man on earth just because he is holding the world record? Yes, he is the fastest man who happens to hold the fastest recorded time in an atheletic event. But is there REALLY no one else who can run faster than Usain Bolt if that person gets similar regimented training and exposure?

What I am trying to say here is that there is no such thing as an ultimate or perfect person in this world. My highest IQ score was 148 which I got when I took the test in the US and the latest score I took was 132 (as shown in FB). Therefore, it is safe to assume that I am a smart person but I am sure there are smarter people out there. In fact, three out of fifteen of my friends have higher IQs than me, according to IQ Test results on FB. And if I compare my Who Has the Biggest Brain game score, I am nowhere close to the best in the World. Disturbing, right? But the thing is even the person with the best score on FB is not necessary the best because there are other people out there that are not on FB or do not have access to FB. Imagine that! So I should remind myself not to call anyone dumb because to another smarter person, I am dumb! And since this world is continuously changing and evolving, the person I called dumb a minute ago could be smarter than me in the future.

There are a lot of other questions that go through my mind and it seems to be growing exponentially. It feels like someone just sent me an e-mail bomb filled with those questions.
  • I know I am hardworking but I know someone close to me called me lazy ...
  • I know I am a smart person but I know people calling me uneducated ...
  • I think I am a fit person (more on the chubby side :-)) but I have heard people calling me fat ...
  • I try very hard to be a kind person all the time but people tend to remember the mean things I did occasionally....
  • I believe my Islamic values are still very strong but many has considered me as a lost cause just because I lack the discipline to pray 5 times a day ... they may be right, I don't know. Wallahuallam ..
  • I think I am a good dad but I am sure there are those who beg to differ ... :-)

Sure, I strive to be as good as I possibly can but I know I will never be perfect. Just like I know that ..

  • My eyesight is close to be crappy but I am thankful that I still can see and enjoy the beautiful sights with the glasses on, of course.
  • My legs are huge and flabby at the moment but I am thankful that I can still walk and go places without much problems.
  • My face may not be good looking but at least I have a face that both my sons can recognise and smile when they see it.
  • My money in the bank may not be as much as I want it to be but at least I don't have to go to the streets to beg for it.
  • My car is not a Ferrari or a Maserati Quartroporte but it does bring my family safely from point A to point B and return safely.

Like I said earlier, there is so much things to write but I can't seem to put them together properly. Nevertheless, I am thankful to what I have .. a wonderful wife who I love with all my heart, the two most adorable and wonderful boys that no words can express how much I love and care for them, my true friends who have seen me through difficult and happy times, and of course, my simple yet interesting worldly possessions that help me keep up with my daily life. So yes .. my glass is definitely half full! Alhamdulillah!

The Obama-Biden comprehensive New Energy for America plan

A summary of the President's elect action items related to Energy plan is listed below (taken from his website (http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/newenergy):

  • Provide short-term relief to American families facing pain at the pump
  • Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
  • Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
  • Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
  • Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.

Hope ...

My father told me in August this year that 2009 will be a very bad year according to some Chinese beliefs. I just nodded and brushed his comments aside thinking that it is still too early to think of 2009 back then.

To tell you the truth, the idea of going through bad period in time crossed my mind many times before that as I noticed the trend for tough and difficult times did come and go every decade or so. So with the oil prices increasing exponentially to almost $150 per barrel in July and sound financial sectors began showing signs of cracks because of the subprime mortgage crisis in the US, I knew someone has already threw s**t in the air and it was about to hit the fan. But I thought, maybe the s**t will miss the fan because in this decade, we just had September 11 ....

Splat! (S**t definitely his the fan and it is all over the place) Lehman Brothers go down really hard on September 15. Damn ... not even a month after my dad told me that bad and nasty thing would happen in the financial sector! Again .. trying to be positive, I foolishly thought that it may be an isolated event because both Europe and Japan seemed to indicate that they are somewhat shielded from the s**t that just splattered all over US. In other words, they could prevent or avoid the Domino effect from US financial sector from affecting them. Well, we all know what happened!!

Here I am ... sitting in front of the computer screen supposedly worrying about the melting rate of iceberg in the Antartic due to global warming (I am currently taking Environmental Management and Policy Masters programme), I too now have to worry about the global financial meltdown that one way or another will affect me and my family even more compared to the melting iceberg in Antartic. Don't get me wrong .. I am still concerned about what impact might the melting of the iceberg be on my children's future here on Earth but the uncertainties from the global financial meltdown is definitely affecting us now.

So winter is just around the corner where I am now ... the days are getting shorter and gloomier. Many people get depressed during winter months and based from my experience living in Switzerland, Japan and now Austria, suicide rate increases during winter. Then comes the global credit crunch that just sent stocks market around the world spiralling down adding to the misery for those about to go through the cold and gloomy winter. Just recently on Monday this past week, a person (I believe it was a guy) lied down on the railway tracks near my office at 6 am attempting to commit suicide. The train driver manning the express train from Salzburg to Vienna was alert and managed to stop the fast moving train thus foiling this person's attempt to take away his precious life. However, this incident paralysed the whole rail network operating between Vienna and Salzburg for more than an hour thus causing more misery to daily commuters heading to their workplace on that chilly Monday morning.

The stream of bad and miserable news seemed unending and any sign of hope was nowhere to be seen or heard of until November 2nd when a good friend, Vic, wrote on a note in his FB site. A note, entitled I got the girl, to his wife and his family on his 11th wedding anniversary ... a note worth sharing with all of you.

Today marks our 11th anniversary! In contrast to the celebrations we've had before, it's becoming more of a family affair.. As in with kids in tow. But, we feel that the anniversary marks the birth of this family, and hence, the celebration should include everyone that is part of this family. It wasn't anything spectacular... Just dinner, with the boys, both of whom were feeling under the weather, but happy to be included nonetheless. To be honest, it wouldn't have been the same without them along. Today also makes me look back at the road that both Jasmine & I have taken. It has not been easy, and neither will it be easy from here on. The future is uncertain, and I for one have been having doubts about a number of things, mainly professionally. As I silently watched my kids and wife tonight, there were mixed feelings.. Fear and panic was one.. for would I be able to provide for all of them in the years to come?

However, I was also infinitely grateful for my brood. For it is the single thing that grounds me, and makes me want to go on. The smiling faces of my wife and children serve as affirmation of the reason I'm alive. More so, now that No.3 is well on the way. I know, whatever happens, they will be there for me.. to save me. So this note is a tribute to my tireless wife, my personal confidante, my patient lover, my beautiful protector, my hero, my saviour.. I may not be the easiest person to live with, but I promise to try to the day I die .. Come what may, whatever life may throw at us, whatever obstacles crop up.. at least.. I got the girl.

Simple, honest and yet beautifully written by my friend to his wife of 11 years and his lover for more than 15 years. Amongst all the s**t that is flying around after hitting the fan, a sliver of hope can be seen as a man, a lover, a husband and a father professes his love to his family and holding on to hope no matter the obstacles. A small beacon of hope from Malaysia and I am sure there are many more individuals out there loving each other ... as love is definitely the best placebo to 'heal' misery and depression. For some, this may seem like a light at the end of the tunnel ..

Then came November 5, a bright flash of hope, in the form of a man riding on a vessel called US Presidential election, inundated the world. Joyus moments were in the air at Grand Park, Chicago when Barrack Obama gave an awe inspiring victory speech. People all around the world also rejoiced this historical moment in the US election history as it gives hope to people that change is possible. His political campaign tagline "Yes we can" gives hope to people that he, as the President of USA with the involvement of every individual with sense of patriotism and responsibility to not only help oneselves but also each other to climb out of the pit filled with problems such as planet in peril and the worst financial crisis in a century. Let's hope that through his leadership and fulfillment of his promise, the nation can start healing ... despair around the world will start ebbing and the future of our children becoming brighter. A daunting task for any person even for President elect Obama and such changes may not happen soon but his victory is the first sign of change. So if everyone do their bit with sense of ownership in making their children's future sustainable without adversely affecting others, then YES WE CAN.

Isam is back and will try his best to update his blog regularly

Dear friends,

September came and gone without any blogs being posted. I have started to write again and I started with a series of questions given by Citikoos who wanted to encourage me to continue contributing to my dormant blog. Please accept my sincerest apologies for that.

Since I have started my distant learning Master's Program on Environmental Management and Policy about two weeks ago, I will also take the opportunity to share the experience and knowledge I have gained from it.

At the moment, I can say that I have underestimated the amount of work required for the distant learning but the Dean, the program coordinators and the professors are all very helpful in providing guidance and advice to help me get through this program sanely.

Thank you .. and I hope to see some of you return to reading my blogs regularly.

I have been tagged!!

Rules:
  1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning
  2. Each player answers the questions about themselves
  3. At the end of the post the player then tags 5 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves a comment, letting them know they got tagged and to ask them to play and read your blog. Sorry, I am not following this rule! Don't have that many friends! :-)

Amazing things you can do on the internet ..

Normally, I would not have the time or most likely would not even think of searching for such interesting things on the internet. However, since I am procrastinating from completing all the packing and carrying of boxes, I went through some interesting websites that do offer ways of rendering your existing photos into other photos. You know what I mean??? Anyway, check this out ...

This is the original photo (shown on the left) and through this website (photofunia), you can actually 'convert' (can't think of a suitable verb to describe it) the photo into other cool looking photos like those shown below. I hope the pictures will illustrate what I am trying to say in a much clearer form. So, if you find this interesting, do check out the website and be prepared to spend some time on it because it is really captivating.
The photo above is now embedded into the photos below .. cool eh? Going to do more later ...

Something I found while packing ..

As I went through all the old stuff while packing them into boxes, I came across an old Purdue t-shirt of mine. Even though I can still fit into it, the sight of it on me in front of a mirror reminded me so much of a covered jackfruit on a tree. :-) Anyway, here is what written at the back of the t-shirt.

Top 10 Reasons to Date an Engineer:

10. Extremely Good Looking.

09. High Starting Salary.

Brain Damaging Habits??

Ever since I have been playing 'Who has the Biggest Brain' on FB, I have been wondering why my memory has not been as good as it used to be. A couple of friends told me that it is due to age. I don't buy it so I went googling over the internet in search for answers. So here is what I found out from this health wiki website.

  1. No breakfast. People who don't have breakfast have lower blood sugar level. This leads to insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain and that could cause brain degeneration. I used to skip breakfast as I don't normally feel hungry in the morning. However, I did notice that my mind was a bit sluggish up until before lunch even though I feel fine physically. Now I make a point to have breakfast in the morning.
  2. Overeating. It causes hardening of the brain arteries and this could lead to decrease of mental power. No wonder I feel a bit slow and spaced out after a very huge meal. I haven't been having many binging sessions lately as I am more conscious about my weight so that explains why my scores have been improving lately. Must remind myself to NOT overeat at all!!
  3. Smoking. It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer's disease. Since I don't smoke at all, I should not have to worry. But I do wonder whether secondary smoking does affect my brain too? Hmmm ..
  4. High sugar consumption. Too much sugar will interrupt the absorptions of protein and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development. I used to love sweet things (food and drinks) but since I found out that my family has a history of diabetes, I have been reducing my sugar intake.
  5. Air pollution. The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain thus decreasing the efficiency of the brain. Now I know why 'fellow co-workers' tend to do well when they are based in Europe and also in Japan. :-)
  6. Sleep deprivation. Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation of sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. No more late night Sudoku, Scrabulous and blogging for me.
  7. Head covered while sleeping. Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decreases the concentration of oxygen to the brain. This could lead to possible brain damaging effects. I don't normally do such thing because I prefer not to inhale my own fart during the night. I am quite sure I do not have any control over such things when I am fast asleep. :-)
  8. Working your brain during illness. Working hard or studying during illness may lead to decrease in effectiveness of the brain as could also damage the brain. Hmm .. I should heed to this advice more often but my conscience always get the better of me.
  9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts. Thinking is the best way to train our brain. Therefore, lacking in brain stimulation may cause brain shrinkage. I suppose playing Sudoku, Scrabulous and 'Who has the biggest brain' on a daily basis might stimulate my brain.
  10. Talking rarely. Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain. I think talking too much over non intellectual matters could also lead to decrease in brain efficiency. I am saying this based on experience. :-)

Just going through the list made me think that I am actually 'positive' on 5 out of 10 items listed above. Pity my brain ... I have not been taking good care of it. Now a healthy body can definitely lead to a healthy mind. I just need to pay more attention to my soul / spirit now. Totally abandon it for a very long time. Schade!

Did you know?

  1. According to IEA's report, world CO2 emission from fuel combustion in 2005 were 27.1 Gigatons. It is projected to increase by a whopping 60% to 42 Gigaton by 2030 if current policies don't change.
  2. I received the Letter of Admission for my Masters Programme 2008 - 2010 in Environmental Management and Policy at Lund University, Sweden. I have a long way to go before I get the go ahead from my management but I have already informed my MD/CEO and he is (was) supportive of it. No problem. One step at a time.
  3. I don't know where exactly I am heading with this post. So I stop now.

Eco Driving according to Toyota & Save More than Fuel

Picture taken from http://europe.theoildrum.com

Eco driving or rather intelligent driving only requires one to maintain responsible behaviour and keeping in mind simple but effective principles while driving. This is not only good to reduce fuel consumption but will also be good for the environment by reducing the CO2 emission. Here are some simple and cost effective ways provided by Toyota for individuals to contribute to the Global Warming Prevention Initiatives and at the same time saving some of our $$$. Another blogger registered in theoildrum website, KiltedGreen pointed out a great way to understand effective driving is to ride your bicycle for a week in order to create awareness on the similarities of smart riding on your bicycle and eco-driving.
  1. Plan before you drive to your destination. In other words, don't be in a rush in which you tend to be more heavy footed on the accelerator (hence more fuel consumption), don't get lost and avoid roads with the most traffic (start - stop motion). So if you are riding your bicycle, you will most likely choose the shortest path to your destination with less hills, obstacles and traffic along the way. And you tend to leave earlier with the bicycle so that you can take your sweet time cycling there without breaking too much sweat.

  2. Set off without carrying unnecessary load. So take out all unused and unnecessary items from the trunk and from the roof rack before you make your trip. If you ride bicycles before, you will definitely know the importance of not having unnecessary additional weight on you or on the bike.

  3. Check tire pressure frequently. If you have ever rode a bicycle with insufficient tire pressure, you would know what I mean.

  4. Drive soon after you start your engine. The longer you idle, the more fuel you waste. If you understand Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) graph, you would notice that most engine are not fuel (BSFC) efficient at idling speed. If you have not driven your car for a few days or it happen to be a very cold day (-20 C), you can leave it idling for maximum 30 seconds to ensure that the oil is distributed well inside the engine before driving off. It is similar to riding a bicycle, I am sure no one will want to pedal when the bike is stationary. It would be just a waste of energy

  5. Depress accelerator slowly for eco driving or don't be heavy footed when driving. A rough guide, according to Toyota, is to reach 20 km/h after 5 seconds after starting. When accelerating, shift up gears as early as possible. Using higher gears normally means lower fuel consumption. Just like riding a bicycle, you would not want to pedal like a mad man in the beginning after starting in order to reach a certain speed. You would want a more smooth and fluid change of gears towards achieving optimum motion with less effort.

  6. Keep smooth running at economical speed. Driving at constant speed (avoid fluctuation) of 40 - 50 km/h on ordinary road or 80 - 100 km/h on highway is said to be good. However, you need to need to test this out yourself because every car is different due to the different efficiencies of powertrain (engine + transmission) and drivetrains. So please take care of your oil level for both engine and transmission to ensure that friction is kept at minimum. And don't drive like you are programmed with binary numbers. I know some people drive like that .. full throttle until vehicle reaches certain speed and then release acccelerator to slow down vehicle and continue to accelerate again in order to reach desired vehicle speed. One can get nauseated in such jerking driving style. This is bad for the passengers in your car and also bad for fuel consumption.

  7. Release accelerator as soon as possible before stopping or slowing down. In other words, don't wait until the last minute to brake before a red light. Be alert during driving and anticipate the traffic condition in front of you.

  8. Stop idling as mentioned in item 4. Stop your engine is you stop more than 1 minute. Modern engines enable you to get in and go relatively easy unless you did not take care of the car in the first place.

  9. Minimise the use of air conditioner. Aiyoo .. in Malaysia in the heat of the day, no sane person would want to off their air conditioner. But I think it is possible not to use the air conditioner in the early hours of the day and late in the night. Seriously, the air conditioner does zap out quite a lot of power from the engine hence increasing fuel consumption during usage

Finally, please check out this video posted by Eutube below for more information on eco driving.

Another journey driven by the high price of crude oil

Picture taken from www.ecofriend.org

The meteoric rise of crude oil price has become the catalyst to the positive growth of many green related technologies, and most importantly the increase of public awareness towards finding and developing sustainable renewable energy beyond 2030. After my work assignment in Japan ended in 2004, I decided to advance my knowledge and work experience through postgraduate studies in Sustainable Development for Energy or Sustainable Hydrogen Economy (from well to wheel). As mentioned in my previous blog, my intent for postgraduate did not materialise because HR thought that both courses were not in line with company's direction and of course, my direct management does not 100% believe in further education. On hindsight, I should have just applied for a scholarship or loan outside from my company and completed my postgraduate studies with one of the courses in a very prestige university in UK. However, it is always easier to look back and reflect on the right course of action. I knew the price of oil will eventually go up but not in less than 5 years (2004 - 2008). Based on the studies that I had been doing by reading data and trends available on the internet, I projected that the world oil crisis would only begin to escalate between 2015 - 2020. So back in 2004, I thought that it would be alright to wait until I would be 35 years old to start my postgraduate studies. So 2008 came and just before I turned 35, I received a preliminary acceptance for my postgraduate studies at Lund University for Environmental Management & Policy. I hope I am not too late ...

Anyway, before embarking on a new journey (still not confirmed because I have not obtained clearance from my company to pursue my postgraduate studies), I would like to start highlighting latest green technologies or environmental issues in my blog as part of my unofficial course work to create awareness amongst friends and families first.

You Raise Me Up - Thank you to all

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who have been part of my life, so I want to dedicate this song 'You Raise Me Up' by Josh Groban to all of you (family, friends, colleagues, acquantainces etc) whether you read my blog or not.

Anyway a diversion from the original intent above, I just recently turn 35 less than a week ago while receiving bottles and bottles of anti-inflammatory (pain killer), anti-biotics and glucose to help with the pain of havinga huge Peritonsillar Abscess just behind my right tonsils. The doctors told me that I have no choice but to go through operation to remove both tonsils and also the abscess behind the right tonsils. The pain in between pain killers were unbearable but many with good intentions claimed that the pain should not be too bad because tonsillectomy is a very simple procedure and done commonly amongst children. Some of them may have thought what a wimp I was based on the look in their eyes or in the tones of their voices. I keep telling myself - get a grip! The pain should not be as bad as it feels. I never spoke of the pain to anyone again.

Fast forward until this day(3rd day post-op), the pain seems to be getting worse as compared to the pain I had prior to the operation. What??? This can't be - I remembered the doctors telling me that the pain will get worse until 10th day post op hence why they gave me medical leave for that long. Again, I thought to myself if I were to take this long to recover at home, I am sure I will be getting a lot of cynical remarks from inconsiderate people. So the message I wrote to everyone is that I got 10 days MC but I will try to come in to work on the 6th day post op. Macho! Actually, when I wrote that message, I did feel that I was recovering much better and faster until about 3 hours ago. AAAAARRRGGHHH PAIN!!

Okay, I know I am not a wimp so I decided to check out the internet and see what is going on or whether there are others who have went through this before. What I found on adult tonsillectomy kinda shocked me. The findings from healthboard.com are summarised below.

Stage 1 (Day 1 - 3 post op) - MODERATE pain. I think I handled the pain well even without taking the pain killers. It is getting bad but I am still able to dish out this blog.

Stage 2 (Day 4 - 9 post op) - Moderate to SEVERE pain. I cannot imagine what is going to happen. All the posts I read in the internet indicated having pain killer medications that one takes orally in order to alleviate the pain. My doctor prescribed medication that I have to take it up my ***. I am dreading this moment.

Stage 3 (Day 10 or thereabouts) - Moderate to minor pain or discomfort. Anyone knows how to time travel??

Anyway, to all who thought that adult tonsillectomy is a walk in the park with simple or at least with common surgery practice, I would like to thank you for raising me up to the next level. Without having this much pain, fatigue from not having enough sleep (due to the pain) and plenty of thinking time from being alone most of the time at hospital, I am now thankful for everything good and bad that is part of my life and thus yearning for a positive change in my life.
Thank you once again.

Hilang - Dayang Nurfaizah & Diddy of AF4 featuring One Republic

A good friend, dj phuturecybersonique, mashed this song sometime early this year for his own pleasure and I love it. Both my sons also love it very much. So I thought of sharing it with my friends and my blog readers. Enjoy the song.

I can't go strawberry picking because I am too short!?

A close friend told me a story that one of his room mates during college didn't want to go strawberry picking with him because he was too short. What???? How could anyone be shorter than a strawberry plant .. okay maybe in Japan where the strawberries are planted on a 1-meter high counter / table. Anyway, if anyone want to give excuse not to go strawberry picking, please do not use the excuse that he / she is not tall enough. As for me, I don't need excuses - I love picking and eating fresh strawberries from the farm early in the day.

Here in Austria, strawberry picking season normally begins in May and ends at the end of June. This summer the weather has been quiet cold and the picking season just recently begun. So my family and I decided to go strawberry picking on a lovely Sunday morning. It is good to go early in the morning because you get to pick big sweet juicy strawberries because most people tend to do that and if you come late morning or afternoon, you are left with the small ones. Since kiasu is my middle name, I would not even consider eating small strawberries when I know the big juicy ones are simply heavenly to eat.

Here are some tips on how to pick strawberries according to Pickyourown.org:-

  1. Grasp the stem just above the berry between the forefinger and the thumbnail and pull with a slight twisting motion. Pick only the berries that are fully red. Part the leaves with your hands to look for hidden berries ready for harvest.
  2. With the stem broken about 1.5 cm from the berry, allow it to roll into the palm of your hand.
  3. Repeat these operations using both hands until each holds 3 or 4 berries. If you got small hands like mine or if the strawberries are huge just like the way I like them, then 2 berries in each hand would do fine.
  4. Carefully place - don't throw - the fruit into your containers. Repeat the picking process with both hands. I follow the Pareto principle, 80 % of the effort used to pick the strawberries is being fueled by 20% of the strawberries eaten from the container. He he!
  5. Don't overfill your containers or try to pack the berries down. Avoid placing the picked berries in the sunshine any longer than necessary. It is better to put them in the shade of a tree or shed than in the car trunk or on the car seat. Cool them as soon as possible after picking. Strawberries may be kept fresh in the refrigerator for two or three, depending upon the initial quality of the berry. After a few days in storage, however, the fruit loses its bright color and fresh flavor and tends to shrivel.

Anyway, I have no idea why I wrote this piece. I actually wanted to write about the recent fuel price increase and its non-relation to PETRONAS. However, every time I do a research on it, I find too many idiotic comments by the Malaysian public on how to tackle the recent fuel price hike in Malaysia with PETRONAS in the equation. Strawberries are so much easier to digest.

Next steps - Self improvement through knowledge enhancement

Protecting the environment while allowing progressive development and industrialisation in Malaysia is a delicate balance that both public and private sectors must strike to ensure Malaysia achieves its target to become a developed nation by year 2020. Realising this and working in a company that is an integral part of the energy equation, I have gained fresh impetus to seek notable qualification and knowledge through Master's Programme in Environmental Management and Policy to make a difference and contribute towards shaping Malaysia's sustainable development and environmental protection, policy and legislation.

I had my first taste dealing with renewable energy through my direct involvement in Purdue's solar racing team that finished 17th position in the 1995 Sunrayce competition but cost of fuel then in the US was less than $1 per gallon and cost of solar panels and its related technology were exorbitant. Personally, I never thought back in 1995 that within the next decade or so, the cost of fuel in the US could exceed $4 per gallon and the demand for reliable and cost effective renewable energy could grow exponentially.

Then through my various assignments in Europe (Switzerland, England and Austria) and in Japan, I developed further awareness of the importance of environmental protection and sustainable energy resources. In these countries, I realised that strict environmental control and development can co-exist in harmony. Recycling waste in Switzerland is a habit rather than a chore. Companies and individuals in these countries alike practice commendable environmental awareness compared to developing countries. Personally, I think European countries are the frontrunners of sustainable environmental management, even when compared to the US, and are much advance in inculcating such practice in their communities, and I have decided to further my studies in Europe to learn and to understand how to implement suitable and improved policies that will bring Malaysia closer to sustainable development towards developed nation in 2020.

Therefore, I hope that the MSc programme in I am applying for will provide the right foundation for me to be part of think tank that will chart the blueprint of Malaysia’s future environmental and renewable energy policies. I am also interested to know and understand more on potential revenue and cost drivers in the ever carbon-constrained world as providing solutions to environmental challenges will provide clear growth opportunities and at the same time is essential to society’s well being. It is clear to me that global companies that fail to factor the environmental issue into their corporate strategy will lose their edge against their competitors.

Law of Garbage Truck

I recently received an e-mail on a write-up by David J Pollay and I thought it was worth sharing it with my friends on my blog.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you’re the Terminator, you’re probably set back on your heels.

However, the mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s important in your life.

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. And I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here’s what happened.

I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, the car skidded, the tires squealed, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the other car’s back-end.

I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and started yelling bad words at us. How do I know? Ask any New Yorker, some words in New York come with a special face. And he even threw in a one finger salute. I couldn’t believe it!

But then here’s what really blew me away. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, “Why did you just do that!? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck™.” He said:

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.

So when someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Believe me. You’ll be happier.
So I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the street? It was then that I said, “I don’t want their garbage and I’m not going to spread it anymore.”

I began to see Garbage Trucks. Like in the movie “The Sixth Sense,” the little boy said, “I see Dead People.” Well now “I see Garbage Trucks.” I see the load they’re carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.

One of my favorite football players of all time was Walter Payton. Every day on the football field, after being tackled, he would jump up as quickly as he hit the ground. He never dwelled on a hit. Payton was ready to make the next play his best. Over the years the best players from around the world in every sport have played this way: Tiger Woods, Nadia Comaneci, Muhammad Ali, Bjorn Borg, Chris Evert, Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, and Pele are just some of those players. And the most inspiring leaders have lived this way: Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King.

Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from the University of Florida, found in his extensive research that you remember bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you recall them more frequently.

So the odds are against you when a Garbage Truck comes your way. But when you follow The Law of the Garbage Truck™, you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by letting go of the bad.

The best leaders know that they have to be ready for their next meeting. The best sales people know that they have to be ready for their next client. And the best parents know that they have to be ready to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses, no matter how many garbage trucks they might have faced that day. All of us know that we have to be fully present, and at our best for the people we care about.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their life.

What about you? What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by?

Here’s my bet: You’ll be happier.

Here in My Home - One Love Undivided

A beautiful song by Malaysian Artists for Unity on racial and national unity that we all Malaysians should embrace. Malaysia is a great country that belongs to all Malaysians regardless of income, race or creed. Enjoy the song and go give a great big hug to another Malaysian. We are truly blessed.

Can all of us look at each other beyond skin colors, status and religious beliefs and call ourselves Malaysian? Can we find a common ground where all Malaysians can be happy and live in harmony? Do you all think that Malaysia could have achieved its success today without the great mix of races which really makes Malaysia unique?

Here in Malaysia - I hope that there shall be one love undivided for all Malaysians as we prepare ourselves to be part of a developed nation by 2020.

Are Wii Fit?

It has been more than 5 months since I embarked on a 'quest' to rid myself of excess fat and try to bring my Body Mass Index (BMI) from Obese to Ideal. To date, my accomplishments are as listed below:-
  • I have written two blogs since starting on this quest. This would be third blog
  • I registered and started working out at gym at my work place.
  • I had never eaten so much salad prior to the start of 'journey'.
  • I went through a 'roller coaster' ride with my weight loss program.
  • I received equal number of encouragement from friends and families as compared to the number of scorns in my effort to become healthy
  • I realised that chronic stress can lead to obesity
  • I also learn that it is better to start on new resolutions on May 1 instead of January 1 because stress is at its highest in the months of March and April.
  • I am sure I learn and realise a whole lot of things but I am sure those are irrelevant and I choose not to write them in this blog.

In the first two month of joining the gym, I was working out at least 3 times a week but from the third month onwards, my shadow was never even within 50 meters from the gym. Motivation was overwhelmed by mental exhaustion. In other words, I always had excuses not to go to the gym.

Well, thanks to those innovative Japanese working at Nintendo, I have found the right combination of stimulation and excitement with a dash of 'kiasu'ness in Nintendo's Wii Fit and Wii Sports as I pursue health and fitness.

As silly as this might sound to non-believers of Wii, I have lost 1 kg (to be exact 900 grams) since getting the Nintendo Wii. The combination of of Wii Sports and Wii Fit is simply exhiliarating. However, I cannot give a proper evaluation of the product yet because the outcome can only be seen after a couple of months. I will be combining my gym workouts and swimming (starting soon) together with daily dose of Wii-ing in the morning and again in the evening. I am not sure how effective will the Wii be in actually reducing my weight but the gaming is surely revolutionary and would definitely spice up my quest to lower my BMI to ideal again. And it really does improve balance through its Yoga Exercises and Balance Games. I will update more on my quest with Wii Fit by my side (under my feet to be exact) when I get results worth sharing.

When two worlds collide ....

Today many people spend much of their time and effort at work in search of better life by having larger paychecks. These paychecks (including bonuses) are usually determined based on one's work performance and contributions to the company. It is very seldom that someone who produce less impressive contributions for the company will be rewarded for their average work performance. So honest people tend to work harder and spend longer hours at the office or workplace in order to accomplish the target given to them by their bosses. After a gruelling long day, these people go back home physically and mentally drained. This is when the two worlds collide just as the sun totally disappears in the western horizon.

For those who are single, some may consider releasing steam at the gym; some will hop, skip and jump into the bathtub, pool or sauna to relax; and the rest will most likely hang out with friends at the bar, clubs or coffee house and just b***h about work. What about those who are parents?

These stress-wrecked working parents normally only have their commute from work to home to adjust or keep in check their emotions before having to start their roles as parents at home. However, the commute no matter how long it takes might not be enough to diffuse the stress and frustration from work. And this could lead to some parents blowing their gaskets all too often.

Yes, it is downright ugly when a person does something regrettable when temper flares. In a work environment, when someone screams and shouts at another person when things go wrong , I personally think that it is not too bad because it normally involves adults or grownups. However, when it happens at home, it is worse and shameful considering our prefrontal cortex can no longer differentiate the impact of such outburst to those who love and care for us. I know this from my own experience, and I am obviously not proud of it.

Sad to say, it is my own two sons who will trigger my outbursts. The combination of my high concern for their welfare and my low tolerance for irrational behavior (commonly exhibited by 6 year old boy and an infant) simply brings out a distasteful character of myself that almost never surfaced during my high school and college days.

I came to realise on how bad I have been as a dad and maybe as a husband lately when my son told my neighbor, who happens to be my colleague, a week ago that I am about to quit my job. My son is smart enough to know that I am very stressed out and unhappy at work in the past couple of months and that somehow greatly affects my judgment when I am at home. So I think, in his mind, he believes that he will get back his cool and loving dad if his dad quits his job - no job equals no stress. Unfortunately, no matter how tempting it might sound to just bum around and do nothing, I have to face the issue and grab the bull by its horns.

I preached about managing expectation to my fellow colleagues so it is time that I embrace this myself and not only to manage my own expectations but also to prioritise them. My family and my personal well being should be taken care first.

So this is my 2 cents on how to manage my two worlds effectively.

Improve self emotionally and spiritually
  • Normally, when a product is defect, I would normally go back to the shop and demand that the product be fixed or replaced or get my money back. However, since the defective product is part of me and cannot be refunded, it has to be done DIY and back to the basics.

Planning and managing expectations.

  • I need to ensure that I spend more time thinking and executing plans that will benefit my family and my personal well being. This includes managing my own and my family's expectation so that it can fit well in the long term plan.

Networking.

  • It is not only important to network with business associates / suppliers / customers etc, but it is also important to network for the sake of my family so that my wife and my children will have greater opportunities to make new friends and most importantly to have more time to maintain existing friendship / relationships.

Time and development.

  • Reduce the amount of time spent at office and increase the amount of time spent with family. In order to be fair, I have to work more effectively in order to maintain work quality.
  • Learn to relax more (slow down the pace of my life) and spend more quality time with family by having more family getaway weekends / holidays and ideally to take long walks at the park or the forest near our house.
  • Put in more effort and time into the development of my sons' mental and physical well being.

I am sure there are more items to consider but I am too tired to think and write all of them down in this blog. Personally, I think it would have been much better if we spend most our time with our family when we wake up in the morning. We can spend time with our family during breakfast and lunch, the two most important meal period. We start work at 3 pm so if we are tired and stressed out from spending too much time with family, we can scream and shout at strangers and co workers at the office and not family members. Finish work latest by 11 pm because even the boss would not want to stay longer at the office. And most importantly, the best transition from work to home is sleep. Imagine sleeping 6 - 8 hours is enough to erase all stress and frustration from work. Why can't we do that???

Today's Kids and Hero Worship: Who can they look up to?

I grew up wanting to be a superhero that can save the earth from power crazy villains. However, the catch was not to be too prominent so forget about Superman, Spiderman, Batman and etc. I preferred the superhero from the TV series 'Greatest American Hero'. Of course, we all know what happenned to that series. I think it got cancelled after 3 seasons and my superhero worshipping didn't last long. I went back to idolising great football players like Pele, Zico and Maradona. So every 4 years or so, my friends and I went beyond our normal evening soccer escapade and started calling ourselves by our favorite players' names and went kicking balls around the field and of course, a few shins. Ouch!

Now that I am a dad with a 6 year old son and another son less than a year old, I am beginning to see that my 6 year old son is beginning to emulate superhero characters when he is playing with his neighborhood friends. I think he started off with Spiderman, then Superman and after that Zoom. He started rounding off the kids around our neighborhood and wanted to start a superhero training academy (he got that idea from Zoom) to discover hidden superhero talents. That didn't last long because the kids that are much older than him decided that they should be the leader of the team and not him. (So to those who are complaining that promotion should not be based on seniority, please teach your kids the same.) When all superhero worshipping activities ebbed, along came Dora the Explorer and Little Einstein. My son only sat and watched the shows but seldom acted out any of the scenes or wanted to skip around looking for clues like Dora did. Eventually, this phase also tapered of after a while.

Then came Avatar: The Last Airbender. Okay, the first time I watched it and I thought how could anyone watched those shows. It was ridiculous and of course watching the show in German just made in worse. Nevertheless, my son was hooked on the show and you need not to remind him to come home and take a shower in the evening as he somehow brought himself back in time to do all those daily chores just to watch that show. Normally, I have to scream and shout to get him back to the house. What shocked me the most was my wife was also into watching Avatar. I had to reconsider my initial judgment and I decided to watch the show from the beginning and most importantly in English. Half way through the first episode, I was also hooked and wanted to watch more.

Anyway, the story here is about hero worship and surprisingly Aang, who is a 12 year old Airbender from the Air Nomad's Southern Air Temple, and his compadre Katara, Sokka and Toph (not in picture) are the ideal heroes for my son and his friends in the neighborhood. My son could relate to Aang, a superhero with child like behavior that is trying to restore harmony and balance to the four nations in a fantasy world home to humans, fantastic animals and supernatural spirits.

In this show, the Avatar, Aang, who is supposed to be a savior for the four nation needed his compadre to defeat evil or in most cases to survive long enough for him to master all bending skills. As silly as this might sound but this cartoon actually teaches the idea that even great people need to work in a team to ensure success. This is especially true when each of the team members have their own unique strength that on their own might not be enough to ward off evil but together they form a very potent force to knock evil off its feet. Then the ultimate lesson is that in order to seek for knowledge one must be able to get out of one's comfort zone in pursuit of knowledge that can restore harmony to the four nations. Of course, telling my son all of this would just fall on deaf ears. So I simplified the lessons for him as listed below.
  1. It is okay to have fun before and after every lesson to gain power (I told him that knowledge is power) But when it is time for training, he must put full concentration so that the knowledge that he gained can be more powerful. So when it is time for him to sit down to do his homework, he must complete all of them before running off to play outside or jumping on the sofa to watch tv. This still does not work for my son because the Master is also a bit impatient and can't concentrate himself. So how must the son concentrate? Lesson 1 to Master - you must lead by example.
  2. Love is the strongest bond that one can have with another person. Whenever a terrible event happen, he can count on his loved ones to come and cajoule him - save him from the bad things.
  3. Friends are very important and should be supportive of each other. Working together as one will produce positive results - good win over evil.
  4. Knowledge is everywhere and he must seek it not just with his eyes but also with other senses. This is referring to Toph who mastered metal bending through understanding the similarity of vibration mode between earth and metal. It is also important for him to understand that he should not limit seeking knowledge with those who are older or superior to him but also from those who are not at his level and younger than him.
  5. He must treat people with disability with utmost respect as that person may possess ability that others might not have. This is in reference to Toph Bei Fong who is a blind 12 year old Earthbender.
  6. He must understand that not all bad people are evil. Just like Aang, he must judge a person by his/her actions and intentions, therefore must be cautious when making decisions. Do not let emotions clout his judgment. Sometimes bad people may want to change their ways but if good people are not willing to accept them, the bad people may have no choice but to return to their old ways.
  7. He must understand priority. He must do things first according to priorities. This is definitely not going through to my son because he repeated the word as protities.

Nevertheless, hero worshipping a fictional character may not be good for my son as he grows up into a teenager. He needs to learn to hero worship a real person but he needs to decide who that person is. It could be Prophet Mohammad s.a.w or it could be President Abraham Lincoln. To name a few - Mahatma Gandhi, Bill Gates, Bono from U2 and Nelson Mandela. As long as he can remember the lesson to take what is good and to leave what is bad, insyaAllah he will turn out great himself maybe not as a superhero but a hero to the people that he cares for, saviour to his community and a protector of the world's harmony. It is now up to him and his 'compadre' to make the journey into the great unknown. Wallahualam.

Importance of Education

I want to further my studies. I have been considering it since 2004 and somehow, I am still here at my company. I have gained 10 kg, hopped one grade higher and blessed with an addition to my family. However, knowledge point of view - not much. Yes, I have gained valuable experience bringing an engine into production but I don't see how I can contribute it back with significant impact to my company and most importantly to my beloved nation.

There are people out there (higher ranked that me) in my company telling me that pursuing a Masters degree and eventually PhD might not be the smartest move for two main reasons - losing seniority at work and having no steady income with family in tow during my studies. I suppose they are hinting that it is not necessary to have higher qualifications in order to rise within my company. Could this be true?

Anyway, I find this hard to swallow because my intent to further my studies is to better myself and contribute back to my company, to Malaysia and most importantly, to increase my chances of finding Paradise, God willing. Yes, I want to seek knowledge that will give me leverage to position myself in places where I can make a difference. For the first time, I have actually made plans (personal and career plans) until 2023. Prior to this, I have only done 5-year plans and only once a 10-year plan. Yes, this sounds too ambitious but I have the map to help me reach my target and I am ready to go. Most importantly, my wife supports the idea. But in the mean time, I want to write about the importance of education. I remembered during my high school days on the importance of education in Islam so I did some research and came across some of the material I wrote below from the Internet.

To seek knowledge is a sacred duty; it is obligatory on every Muslim - male and female. Even the first revelation of the Quran for Surah Al-Alaq that encourages people to read, to seek knowledge, to educated oneself and of course, be educated. That was why during the early years of Islam, we have had many great Muslim scientists and scholars that contributed immensely to human knowledge. Sadly, the Muslims today are arguably the most humiliated community in the world. In my heart, I know the previous statement could not be true because we have so many successful devout Muslims in the world. No man becomes truly a Muslim without knowing the meaning of Islam because he becomes a Muslim not through birth but through knowledge.

Therefore, the main purpose of seeking knowledge is bring us closer to Allah s.w.t. It is not simply for the gratification of the mind and senses but it must be linked to values and goals. Therefore, the Quran should be the guiding star to show us the path to Paradies and success in the world. Another purpose of seeking knowledge is to gain the good of this world and not to destroy it through wastage, arrogance and in reckless pursuit of wealth.

Nevertheless, it is impossible for anyone to gain anything more than a fraction of the vast knowledge that is available out there. Therefore, we must decide what is important for us to know and how to go about to acquire this knowledge.

The future is in our hands. Always remember that flow of knowledge must never be stopped so I must remind myself that as I seek knowledge I must also prepare to disperse and institutionalise it so that greater number of people can benefit from it. May Allah s.w.t. give us strength to behave and act just as He likes us to do and be pleased with us, and that should be the purpose of our lives. Rabbi zidni ilma

Free our mind first before we can free Tibet ..

The history of Tibet and China goes a long way back but to get to the point that seems to upset many people, China invaded Tibet on October 7, 1950. Tibetans called it invasion but the Chinese called it liberation. This is where HIStory could be HERstory.

Okay, what about the Olympics? Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin, a French nobleman who revived the modern Olympics with its famous creed:

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well

Tibetans and its supporters alike must have embraced the creed well as can be viewed on CNN and other new channel. They are taking part in demonstration against the torch relay - they were struggling with the police force as they tried to grab the torch and I have to say that they fought well. World leaders, mainly from Europe and famous celebrities are also jumping on the bandwagon and demanding China do something about their human rights records (Tibet and Darfur) and resolve spiraling pollution crisis in China.

I just got two questions to ask: what is the real impact for world leaders to boycott the opening of Olympics with respect to China to improve their human rights records? Doesn't anyone remember the phrase that Rome was not built in one day?

So if world leaders want to make a difference, please arrange for a proper dialogue sessions with Chinese leaders to show that they are really serious in helping China improve their human rights record and reduce pollution. Otherwise, do something drastic such as imposing economic sanctions (boycott Chinese products) on China. Boycotting the Olympic opening ceremony with its slogan 'One World One Dream' does not make much sense!! How long did it take America to abolish slavery? How long did it take Russia to bring down the communist curtain?

And if people want to make a difference, please feel free to protest and voice out concerns peacefully but disrupting the torch run is just plain nuisance!! For those who are ignorant, the current Dalai Lama has always supported Beijing's hosting of the Olympic and he insists that the torch run should complete its route around the world peacefully. Please take note that he is demanding China to give Tibet greater autonomy and allow them to preserve their culture. There are bigger issues surrounding us that no one seem to take note such as Iraq and Afghanistan occupation; Guantanamo Bay; Israel -Palestine conflict; one in six countries faces food shortages; Greenland's ice is thinning at alarming pace; weather around the world has gone haywire; one in five person in the world has no easy access to safe drinking water and many more.

China has made many positive changes since Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. Its reform and opening up policy have provided tremendous wealth to its citizen and also contributed to the world development. I am not saying that their human rights record is impeccable now but Chinese leaders have made earnest efforts to rid malpractices in human rights field. China has 1.4 billion people and like a huge oil tanker, it will take a lot of effort and time for them to change direction. China is slowly moving in the right direction towards meeting international level expectation. I am not so sure about the direction of USA is heading in terms of its human rights record as many people are questioning US treatment of captured non citizens, the legality of Iraq war and allege violations of national sovereignty. So it is time for all of us to free our minds from pre-conception that the media is currently generating. My suggestion is to watch Al-Jazeera International after watching CNN, read Malaysiakini after reading The Star; eat mangosteen after eating durian but most importantly, use our brain and think first before making judgment. Tibet has gotten great exposure of the ill treatment it receives from China. I suggest that everyone should concentrate on the real issue (dialogue sessions with China on Tibet and while we are at it, have dialogue sessions with US to tell them that not all Muslims are terrorists) and leave the Olympics to professional athletes to battle it out.

March Madness

March election is over. Alhamdulillah! Dust has not settled yet but it seems nothing bad is going to happen. Malaysians, irrespective of race and religion, know what is best for our country.

During the campaign (as can be found in Youtube) many people were talking about a lot of stuff and making promises that I found a bit difficult to swallow. I am shocked to know that not many people out there were willing to correct some of the statements made particularly on the issue of fuel price increase in Malaysia. Are we all deaf, dumb and blind??

According to our ex-Finance Minister from 1991 - 1998, the fuel price in Malaysia was Rm 1.10 per liter and PETRONAS' profit was between Rm 25 - 30 billion because he 'made' sure that it never exceeded those amount. What he failed to mention was the price of crude oil was USD 20 - 25 per barrel!

Now the fuel price in Malaysia is Rm 1.92 and the price of crude oil is hovering above USD 100 per barrel. Okay, I am not a qualified economist but when crude price goes up, so should our fuel pricing. So if the people are asking for transparency, then I suggest the government should show the actual amount of subsidies to sustain the fuel price at RM 1.92 per liter and link it to the loss of possible development from those subsidies. For 2007 alone, the Malaysian government is spending RM 40 billion on fuel subsidies!!

People should know that PETRONAS' profit no longer depends on domestic production as it has been going international since late 90s in pursuit of excellence. The more profit PETRONAS makes (higher ranking in Fortune 500) the better of its chances to enter another international market. Therefore, the higher the profit that PETRONAS makes, the higher the tax that PETRONAS pays to the government of Malaysia so that means more money for the development of our country. The rakyat needs to understand that the success of PETRONAS is of utmost importance to them and asking PETRONAS to subsidise fuel will only benefit a fraction of the rakyat especially the rich. Artificially low fuel price only encourages waste, misallocated capital and other complications.

How should we resolve this? We need intelligent people who can be trusted to manage the wealth of the country for the benefit of the rakyat. There is hope as the level of education in Malaysia has increased because the government invested in setting up many local universities and also sending many students overseas. Therefore, I can only hope and wish that this will translate into having many, if not all, highly educated persons in the government and also in the opposition. The only thing we need to ensure is that our future political leaders have integrity, honesty and accountability, which cannot be taught in school and universities, are of same importance of having good academic qualifications. Therefore, it is our duty to instill these values in our younger brothers and sisters and of course, our children.

There is less than 12 years remaining before we should reach the target of being a developed nation and eliminate poverty in our country. My question is whether we will have enough highly responsible and qualified people running the country to help us reach the target.

The world is in the palms of my hand ..

'Green' earth in the palm of my hands! Okay, okay, okay! I am not going to write about saving the earth and so on. Please look a few posts below and you will see that I wrote about my weight challenge about three weeks ago. The target was to lose 1 kg / week and by end of March I should reach 80 kg.

Well, three weeks have passed since and I have only lost 1 kg despite me going 'green' and working out at the gym. I still have five more weeks to go according to the challenge but it seems impossible for me to achieve the goal in a healthy manner. I have not given up yet but I have to be realistic and I should learn from my mistake - I should just keep my big mouth shut.

For those who believe in me, please be patient as I will eventually achieve the target weight. I know I can do it but it is going to take longer than I originally anticiapated. For those who snickered at the idea of me losing weight, you may have won the battle but I will win the war.

Quoting from the movie Ratatouille, 'Change is nature and it is the part that we can influence. It starts when we decide' I decided that it is time to change, be healthy and look good.
Florida, I shall one day return to you as I once was ...

Monopoly

My son is going to be 6 this year, and I thought it would be good to teach him the value of money since he used to count them according to the number of currency notes he has irrespective of the amount, for example, he may have three RM10 notes and five RM5 notes but to him, he only has 8 ringgit/dollar. Alamak! This is not good!

So I went out to Toys R Us store sometime in December last year to get him the Monopoly Junior. He was thrilled with it from the get go and started playing it on a daily basis until he is really good at it. The rules are simple and obviously, it is does not have the same rules as the Standard monopoly. Anyway, the rules are meant for kids between the age of 5 - 8 years old. So who cares, right? So day in and day out he went around bugging everyone to play the board game with him until ...

His aunt got tired of playing the Junior version and decided to teach him the Standard version. On the box it says that it is suitable for kids above 8 years old and adults, of course. Either his aunt can't read or my son is way beyond his age and is able to comprehend the complexity of Monopoly's cut throat strategy of winning. Err.. maybe that only existed in my side of family when I was a kid.

The reason why I was initially against my son playing the grown-up Monopoly is because when adults play with kids, adults may find it difficult to play according to the rules exactly, and they have to give in to the kids so that the kids don't cry or feel disappointed when they lose the game that they do not fully comprehend. But giving kids a chance is also not good because then adults are teaching the kids that they (the kids) can always get away with certain rules just because they are kids.

Today, I know for a fact that my son don't need sympathy when it comes to playing Monopoly. He has beaten me twice fair and square since we started playing it according to the official rules. And whenever I do beat him, he thinks that I put some sort of mambo-jambo on the dices so that I always get both Parklane and Mayfair. I wonder where he picks up such statement!?

Anyway, I learn that I should not impose my ideals to my son and to anyone else for that matter. My son's ability to learn the game and to develop his own strategy in buying properties impresses me very much especially at his age. Okay he still cries once in while when things don't go according to his expectations but that's okay - he is still only 5+. So, the possibility of what Roving Soul has said in the comment section could be true that my son's ability must have come from my wife's side of family (Roving Soul and my wife are related) because when I was at his age, all I knew was Buy! Buy! Buy! at every property I landed on - so of course, I went broke pretty quick. I would like to think that I am smarter now but the point is my son still can still outsmart me.

So to all the mommies and daddies out there, do get your kids a game (value adding game) that all of you can play together. Your son or daughter may not understand the game in the beginning but you will be surprise how fast they learn.

Finally, please take a few minutes of your time to vote for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to be part of the World Edition Monopoly. Thank you.

Era of Entitlement

Quoting from Wikipedia, entitlement is a guarantee of access to benefits because of rights, or by agreement through law and/or policy. It can also refer, in a more casual sense to someone's belief that he/she is deserving of some particular reward or benefit. It is often used as a negative term in popular parlance (i.e. a 'sense of entitlement'). The legal term, however, carries no value judgment: it simply denotes a right granted.

Hmm .. where am I heading to on this subject? Keep on reading ..

Ms. Marci A. Hamilton, who is the Paul R. Verkuil Chair in Public Law at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, wrote in her legal column back in 2003 that:
This is the Age of Entitlement. She [I] does [do] not mean entitlement only in the
sense of the belief that one is entitled to a government handout. She [I] also
means [mean] entitlement in the simpler sense of the belief that one deserves
to get exactly what one wants - regardless of the law and despite the public good.
Okay Roving Soul seems to get it based on the comment in this blog but I am divided on this subject. I could be dead wrong and would not want to generalise such issue but somehow I think those (people I know, of course) including myself who were born between 1970 to 1974 are in the grey zone. It seems those who were born from 1975 onwards have a strong inclination towards demanding entitlement as compared to those born before 1970's.

The comments from Ms. Hamilton were made 5 years ago, however, as recent as December last year, an editorial from Automotive Engineering International (AEI) that I came across while trying to prepare for my upcoming technical assessment that confirms what I have been thinking all along i.e. there is a whole new generation expecting entitlement as aforesaid. The excerpt from the editorial (conversation between AEI editor and Mr. Jack Curcio - former President and CEO of Mack Truck) will hopefully clarify my point further:

Jack attributed his success in life to always doing the best job possible. Jack told me (AEI editor) that this message is one that he communicates in his numerous speaking engagements, particularly to college students: "Take the hand that is dealt to you and do the best job ever."
This philosophy is not unlike that of my own father's. He constantly reminded me and the rest of my family members that, if you do the best job possible, you will ultimately be recognized and rewarded. Be rewarded with more responsibility, more authority, and more money. I always believed that self-interest was better served by doing good work than by getting good things. Too many times I see in younger generations the desire and need for immediate reward. Too often, it seems, our youth is unwilling to accept special assignments or take on additional responsibilities unless these are accompanied by immediate reward. Entitlement is a word that I never grew up with, yet now I hear it all the time. Interestingly, I searched for the word in my 1960 edition of the Webster's Dictionary, and found that it did not exist. In my 1998 edition, however, "entitlement" was an entry. I
believe that this relatively new concept has been born out of the drive within
organizations to empower people. Some individuals clearly equate "empowerment"
with getting what they want.

Okay, the reason why I mention I belong in the grey zone is because I have witnessed and also gone through both experiences as written by AEI editor above. At work, I would do my best in everything I do as I know that it will make me stronger and better at my tasks. When I happen to stumble upon spare time, I would volunteer to do work that are beyond my job scope to broaden my experiences and of course, I would not hesitate to work with all sort of people regardless of rank, gender, race, level of education and age because the experience gained will nurture me into a better person personally and professionally. At the end I know all that I have gained so far will make me a better leader and person for my family, friends and people I work with. Instant reward was never an issue but, I do expect recognition, respect and trust from them.

Sadly, in place there is the performance appraisal system (when it is not done correctly) that to many people at my workplace replaces the human interaction from superiors to/from subordinates and co-workers to co-workers, as it is done at most twice a year. This is simply insufficient to nurture positive values amongst employees which makes it even more difficult to manage expectations. It cannot replace the simple pat on the back when one does well, reassurance for another that his/her mistake is a learning experience, the advice and moral boost amongst fellow workers i.e. the human touch part of it.

On one hand, one may feel that he/she is doing very well only to find out six months or one year later that he/she is merely meeting expectations. Wassup!?!? On the other hand, one may feel that he/she deserves to get good appraisals just because he/she did a token more than the previous year without considering his/her actual contribution to the company.

Mr. Paulo Coelho, the author of Alchemist, wrote, "... everything you do in life will leave a mark, so try to be conscious of that in your every action." I know that there are people out there who work because they want to make the world around them a better place. I hope I have the strength and will to be one of them and not be sucked into the vortex of entitlement. Don't get me wrong, I would like to be rewarded as a recognition for all the great things I have done so far but not just because ...
